The U.S. Army's SkyFoundry small-drone initiative has selected Vulcan Elements to supply rare-earth magnets for the brushless motors used in the programme, according to Janes and the supplier.

The missing motor component
Vulcan says its neodymium-iron-boron magnets will support the Army's production of brushless direct-current motors. Janes reports that Tobyhanna Army Depot opened a brushless motor assembly line in June, making the magnet decision a link between domestic motor assembly and the materials inside the motor.
The programme is designed around a vertically integrated U.S. small-UAS supply chain. The public announcements describe a strategic selection, but they do not disclose the complete order quantity or delivery timetable.
Why magnets matter to FPV and UAS builders
A brushless motor's performance depends on more than the stator, windings and electronic speed controller. Magnet strength, consistency, temperature behavior and mechanical balance influence torque, efficiency and reliability across the propulsion system.
Supply-chain resilience also affects product design. If a manufacturer can control material quality and availability, it can plan motor production more confidently; if the feedstock or magnet supply is uncertain, the bottleneck moves upstream even when the motor assembly line is ready.
The scale question
Vulcan describes an Army goal of producing up to one million small drones annually, while independent reporting notes that the programme's actual production pace remains a question. Planned factory capacity is not the same as delivered motors or completed aircraft.
The important follow-up metrics will be first deliveries, repeatable motor output, the number of qualified suppliers and whether the supply chain can support the Army's stated production ambition without sacrificing testing or field reliability.
Motor resilience starts before the motor shop
The SkyFoundry selection shows that drone manufacturing policy reaches down to magnets inside brushless motors. For FPV and larger UAS, the lesson is similar: propulsion reliability depends on the entire component chain.
