Aselsan says its KORKUT 35 air-defence system demonstrated detection, tracking and engagement against several uncrewed aircraft types during a live-fire event attended by defence delegations from 12 countries.
What the demonstration covered
The company says the system engaged fixed-wing, delta-wing and mini/micro UAVs under representative operational conditions. It also highlighted accurate fire while the system was moving, an important requirement for a mobile unit protecting forces or critical sites rather than a fixed installation.
A separate scenario tested firing accuracy and shot dispersion against a moving ground target while both the system and target were in motion. That is not the same as a drone intercept, but it indicates that the demonstration was also presenting the gun system's broader stabilized fire-control capability.
Why gun systems remain relevant
Small drones have pushed air defence toward cheaper and more flexible effectors. Guns can offer a high-volume response against some short-range targets, especially when the engagement does not justify a larger missile or when electronic attack cannot be relied upon.
Their effectiveness depends on the complete chain: detection, classification, tracking, fire-control quality, ammunition, safety geometry and the ability to handle more than one target. A live-fire result is encouraging, but it does not by itself establish performance against every drone profile or swarm density.
The procurement questions
Potential buyers will want details that are not included in a short demonstration announcement, including detection range, tracking accuracy, ammunition type, reload process, weather performance and integration with higher-level air-defence networks. Mobility and crew protection also matter when the system is expected to operate near a contested front line.
The event's international audience suggests that counter-UAS demand is becoming a global market. To turn interest into a deployable capability, vendors must show repeatable results and explain how their system fits alongside radars, jammers, interceptors and existing command networks.
A live-fire event is one data point
KORKUT 35's demonstration adds to the growing evidence that short-range gun systems still have a role in layered counter-UAS defence. The next question is how the system performs across realistic target mixes and how easily it integrates with the rest of a site's air picture.
