The confirmed maritime impact

AP reported that the Togo-flagged Alfa Watan sank after a powerful explosion. The Palau-flagged Able caught fire, and a Bulgarian ferry evacuated its 18 crew members. Authorities suspended the search for the Alfa Watan crew on Wednesday. Those facts establish severe danger to civilian shipping even before investigators identify the attackers.

Attribution remains open

Bulgaria’s president linked the worsening security environment to the war in Ukraine but did not directly assign blame for these strikes. Ukraine blamed Russia, while Russian representatives denied involvement. Treating either accusation as a completed investigation would misstate the public record.

Why operators should watch the investigation

The reported mix of sea and aerial drones complicates warning and response at sea. Ship operators and coastal authorities need reliable identification, routing advice and rescue coordination, not just a single counter-drone device. Satellite imagery requested by Bulgaria and Romania may help establish the attack sequence and origin.
