Kongsberg and Oshkosh Defense Europe have signed an agreement to deliver PROTECTOR RS4 remote weapon stations equipped with Kongsberg's counter-UAS capability on Joint Light Tactical Vehicles for the Royal Netherlands Armed Forces.
What the Dutch system combines
The package combines the mobility and protection of the Oshkosh JLTV with a modular remote weapon station and PROTECTOR counter-UAS software and sensors. Kongsberg says the system is designed to detect, track, identify and neutralise unmanned aerial threats, including individual drones and more complex scenarios.
Putting the capability on a tactical vehicle gives commanders a mobile option. A fixed site may provide stronger infrastructure and power, but a vehicle-mounted system can move with a convoy, protect a temporary position or cover a changing operational area.
Why integration matters
A remote weapon station is only one part of a counter-drone engagement. The vehicle must receive a reliable track, distinguish a threat from a non-threat and apply an effect within a safe and authorised engagement process. The value of a mature platform is the integration work between those steps.
Kongsberg describes the RS4 as modular and already in service with 31 nations and allied forces. Existing fleet experience can reduce training and sustainment friction, although the counter-UAS configuration still needs to prove how it performs against low, slow and small targets in the Netherlands' operating environments.
The wider European signal
The agreement is another example of European forces adding counter-drone capability to vehicles they already understand rather than waiting for a completely new platform. That approach may shorten fielding timelines and help units protect manoeuvring forces, logistics nodes and temporary command posts.
It also creates a requirement for common data and rules across allied fleets. A mobile system is more useful when its tracks and status can be shared with other sensors, air-defence units and command networks without forcing operators to maintain a separate island of information.
Mobility is part of the counter-drone effect
The Kongsberg-Oshkosh agreement shows how counter-UAS is moving into everyday force-protection vehicles. The key measure will be whether the integrated package can deliver dependable detection and response while units are moving and under realistic operational pressure.
