Meteomatics unveiled Strato on October 8, a weather-sensing multicopter that the company says reached 34,245 feet. Its purpose is to collect vertical atmospheric profiles at chosen places and times. Source: AeroTime.

A different observation tool
AeroTime and Unmanned Systems Technology report that Strato measures temperature, humidity, pressure and wind while ascending and descending. Unlike a disposable balloon, the aircraft is designed to return for reuse and to sample a specific location.
The forecast value
Upper-air observations can improve local knowledge near jet streams and changing weather. Targeted sampling could help aviation and launch operators when fixed observation schedules miss a fast-moving condition. That usefulness depends on data quality and integration into forecast models.
Questions for deployment
The reported 34,245-foot ascent is a technical milestone, not proof of routine service. Operating permissions, weather limits, icing performance, maintenance needs and repeatable profile accuracy will determine how broadly the system can replace or complement balloons.
