BAE Unveils Two Counter-Drone Systems

BAE Systems used the opening of AUSA on October 12 to show two counter-drone demonstrators: a high-power microwave system and the Multi-Domain Artillery Cannon System. The pairing illustrates an industry push for more ways to address large drone raids. BAE Systems.

Two approaches at AUSA

BAE Systems introduced its High Power Microwave (HPM) and Multi-Domain Artillery Cannon System (MDACS) as capability demonstrators on October 12. The company pitches them as complementary responses to large numbers of small unmanned aircraft and other aerial threats. A microwave emitter seeks electronic effects, while the cannon provides a kinetic option.

The magazine problem

Repeated drone raids can strain conventional interceptors because each shot consumes ammunition and time. BAE says HPM is intended to support repeated engagements without the same physical magazine constraint. That does not make engagement unlimited: power supply, cooling, target geometry, rules of engagement and system availability still bound real operations.

Where the evidence stands

BAE’s HPM product information describes Technology Readiness Level 6 and range testing. The October announcement identifies demonstrators rather than a fielded Army deployment or new procurement award. Claims about effectiveness against particular swarms or in complex civilian airspace need operational testing and independent assessment.

Why layers remain necessary

Counter-UAS defenses must detect, classify and track threats before choosing an effect. A directed-energy option and a cannon can cover different situations, but their value depends on integration with sensors and command systems. The AUSA unveiling is therefore a development milestone, not proof that saturation attacks have been solved.
