MBDA and Fortem Expand Drone Defense Pact

Fortem Technologies and MBDA expanded their counter-drone agreement on October 12, aiming to offer Fortem’s DroneHunter and their jointly developed FireThorn interceptor through MBDA defense architectures. The announcement moves a 2024 technical collaboration toward a broader sales arrangement. Fortem Technologies.

Two different defeat options

Fortem describes DroneHunter as a net-capture system intended for settings where debris or collateral damage is a concern. FireThorn is described as a faster kinetic interceptor with an MBDA warhead for one-way attack drones. The announcement does not include comparative trial data for the two systems.

Integration is the core claim

MBDA plans to offer DroneHunter as a layer within its existing air-defense networks, while the firms will jointly market FireThorn. That could let customers use established sensors and command tools, but actual interoperability must be proven in customer configurations.

Commercial limits

The companies say sales remain subject to export authorizations. They disclosed no new customer order, contract value or delivery schedule with this expanded agreement. Displaying FireThorn at AUSA is a product showcase, not evidence of fielding.

Why a mixed portfolio matters

Drone threats differ in size, speed and location. Net capture and kinetic defeat address different operating constraints, especially around populated or sensitive sites. The partnership will be meaningful if it translates those choices into a reliable, authorized engagement process.
