DJI O3 changed the expectations for digital FPV image quality. The newer O4 generation pushes the ecosystem forward again, but an upgrade is not automatic for every pilot.

The real O3 vs O4 question is not whether the newer system is technically better. It is whether the improvement matters enough to rebuild drones, buy compatible goggles or controllers, and accept the cost of switching parts across your fleet.
What O3 Still Does Well
O3 remains a strong choice because many pilots already have frames, mounts, wiring habits, and goggles built around it. For everyday freestyle, park cruising, and cinematic practice, O3-level HD is already a major jump from analog.
If your flying happens in open areas and your current video link is not the limiting factor, spending money on batteries, props, frame parts, or practice may improve your actual flying more than replacing every air unit. This is especially true for pilots still tuning rates, learning lines, or crashing regularly.
Where O4 Can Make Sense
O4 is most interesting when you are starting a fresh build or want the newest DJI video ecosystem. Look at the upgrade when you need better low-light behavior, improved link confidence, or a setup designed around current-generation goggles and air units.
The upgrade can also make sense for cinematic pilots who care about cleaner image capture, better handling of bright skies and shadows, and a more modern HD workflow. But if your quad is mostly a durable freestyle trainer, the cost of the air unit matters.

Consider O4 if you are building a new 5-inch cinematic quad, a clean 3.5-inch HD cruiser, or a drone that needs the newest DJI compatibility. Pair the video system with appropriate carbon fiber FPV frames, a clean power path, and secure antenna mounting instead of treating the air unit as a drop-in afterthought.
Smart Purchase Path
If you are unsure, do not upgrade all aircraft at once. Build one O4 test platform, keep one known-good O3 quad, and compare them at the same flying spots. Watch for heat, signal confidence, shadow detail, and repair complexity. The right answer becomes obvious after real packs, not spec-sheet reading.
