Governors Seek Counter-Drone Training

A bipartisan group of 29 US governors asked federal officials to expand counter-drone training for state and local agencies, corrections personnel and National Guard units. North Carolina’s governor published the request on October 7. Source: North Carolina Governor.

What the governors requested

The letter calls for more training places to reduce travel and wait times. It also seeks specialized instruction for corrections staff on legal authority, evidence collection and safe responses, plus expanded National Guard training for major events and infrastructure protection.

Authority requires practice

The governors frame the request around newer federal authorities under the Safer Skies Act. Detection, identification and mitigation are different tasks, and a field response can affect bystanders and other aircraft. Training capacity therefore matters as much as hardware procurement.

The next decision

The release announces a request, not a new federal training program or appropriation. Operators should watch for federal agency responses, published curricula, eligibility rules and measured capacity. Those steps will show whether local responders gain usable capability.
