Shield AI said on October 8 that the U.S. Navy added $150 million to its X-BAT development agreement. The company will match that amount while building a vertical-takeoff autonomous combat aircraft. Source: Shield AI.

What the money supports
The modification targets defense exportability features. Shield AI says engine light-off, thrust-vectoring nozzle integration and wind-tunnel work are complete, while test aircraft are under construction. The company describes the broader public and private investment as reaching $400 million.
Why runway independence matters
A system designed for ships, islands and austere sites could give commanders more basing options than aircraft that need long runways. The technical challenge is larger than takeoff: shipboard handling, safe integration with crewed aircraft and repeatable sorties must be proven.
What remains unproven
Shield AI expects flight testing later in 2026. The announcement is a funding and development milestone, not evidence of operational deployment, endurance or combat performance. Those claims require flight-test data and later military evaluation.
