UNIFY.C2 says it is integrating Squarehead Technology's passive acoustic sensors into its counter-UAS command platform, adding another data source for detecting and tracking small drones.

Why acoustic sensing is useful
Small drones can be difficult to detect when they fly low, hide behind structures or operate in environments where radio-frequency signals are weak or deliberately suppressed. Acoustic sensors listen for the sound pattern of motors and propellers, offering a passive channel that does not depend on the aircraft transmitting a signal.
The limitation is equally important: sound changes with wind, buildings, traffic and other machinery. Acoustic detection is therefore most useful when it contributes to a multi-sensor picture rather than being treated as a complete answer on its own.
The value of sensor fusion
UNIFY.C2 says acoustic data will be fused with RF, radar and electro-optical sources in a single operational interface. In principle, the combination can improve confidence: a sound signature, a radar track and an optical confirmation can be correlated instead of forcing an operator to interpret separate screens.
Fusion also creates a data-engineering challenge. Systems need common timestamps, track association, confidence scoring and a clear way to show when sensors disagree. Poorly designed fusion can make an interface look sophisticated while hiding uncertainty from the person making the decision.
Where buyers should test it
A serious evaluation should include urban noise, weather changes, RF-denied conditions, different drone sizes and low-altitude routes behind obstacles. Buyers should measure detection probability and false alarms over time, not only whether a system spotted a drone during a short demonstration.
The integration also matters operationally. Security teams need alerts they can understand, exportable event records and a workflow that connects detection to response. A sensor that adds data without reducing decision time may increase workload instead of improving protection.
Detection works best as a layered system
The UNIFY.C2 and Squarehead partnership is a useful example of the direction of counter-drone software: combine different imperfect sensors, explain the resulting track clearly and give operators enough evidence to act without pretending that any one channel is infallible.
