VTX power controls how strongly your drone transmits video, but more power is not automatically better. The correct output setting depends on other pilots, heat, antenna placement, and the flight environment.

The Practical Power Ladder
25mW is the cooperative setting. It is commonly used for race tracks, indoor testing, and multi-pilot sessions because it reduces channel bleed into nearby frequencies.
200mW to 400mW is a useful middle ground for solo park freestyle. It gives more margin without turning the VTX into a tiny space heater.
800mW, 1W, and higher settings are for deliberate long-range or heavy-obstacle use. They demand better cooling, better antennas, and more awareness of local rules.
When to Use Each Output

High-power analog transmitters generate real heat. A VTX that survives in flight may overheat on the bench because props are not pushing air across the heatsink.
If you are comparing high-output parts such as the 2.5W high-power FPV video transmitter, 3W ultra-power FPV video transmitter, or 5W long-range FPV video transmitter, plan airflow and mounting before soldering.
Good Power Habits
- Use the lowest power that gives a stable link for the flight.
- Coordinate channels and power when other pilots are nearby.
- Do not leave high-power VTX settings active during long bench work.
- Confirm the selected power level in Betaflight OSD before flying far.
A Smarter Range Upgrade Path
Before jumping from 25mW to 1W, improve antennas, pilot position, and channel selection. Those changes often produce a cleaner improvement than raw power alone.
Power is a tool, not a permission slip. A careful 400mW setup can outperform a careless 1W setup with a damaged antenna or blocked mounting position.
